Gorilla trekking concentrates three insurance problems into a single day. First, the permit: Rwanda charges $1,500 per person, Uganda $800 in high season ($600 in the April, May, and November low season), and neither refunds a trekker who falls ill — parks turn away anyone symptomatic to protect gorillas from human respiratory disease. Second, altitude. Third, evacuation from terrain no vehicle can reach.
The permit problem
Standard trip cancellation protects the permit if you cancel the whole trip for a covered reason before departure. The gap is mid-trip: you're in Kigali, you have a fever, and this morning's trek is gone. That loss falls under permit protection or generous trip-interruption wording — a benefit safari-specialist insurers list by name and generic policies usually don't.
Altitude and terrain
Volcanoes National Park treks range roughly 2,500–4,000m; Bwindi's are lower but steeper. Most policies' altitude ceilings sit at 4,500m or above, so trekking altitude is rarely a problem — but a minority of wordings cap trekking at 3,000m, which a long Volcanoes trek can breach. An injury mid-trek means a ranger-coordinated stretcher carry to the trailhead, then road or air to Kigali or Kampala. Rwanda's side is logistically easier: Kigali's hospitals are about two hours from the park.
