Pre-Existing Condition
A medical condition you had — diagnosed, treated, or symptomatic — during the policy's lookback period (usually 60–180 days before purchase). Claims traced to it are excluded unless you qualify for a waiver.
Insurers don't ask for your medical history up front. Instead, when you claim, they look back at the 60–180 days before you bought the policy. Anything diagnosed, treated, medicated differently, or merely symptomatic in that window is a pre-existing condition — and a claim caused by it can be denied.
The waiver
Most US insurers offer a pre-existing condition waiver if you buy the policy within 14–21 days of your first trip payment and insure the full trip cost. For older travelers heading somewhere remote, this waiver is arguably the single most valuable feature a policy can have — buy early to qualify.
