Medical Evacuation
Emergency transport from the place you're injured or fall ill to the nearest facility that can actually treat you — by road, light aircraft, or dedicated air ambulance. On safari this is the single most expensive risk a policy covers.
On a beach holiday, medical evacuation means an ambulance ride. On safari it can mean a stretcher carry to an airstrip, an unscheduled charter aircraft to the nearest town, and an air ambulance on to Nairobi or Johannesburg — a chain that routinely costs $60,000–$120,000 and can exceed $250,000 for complex cases.
What to check
The evacuation limit: at least $250,000 for remote camps; $500,000+ gives real headroom.
Whether the policy pays for evacuation to the nearest adequate facility or all the way home.
Whether the insurer coordinates the evacuation itself or reimburses you afterwards — coordination matters when you're unconscious in the bush.
