The Mara is the best-served safari destination in East Africa for medical emergencies, and that changes the insurance calculus. AMREF Flying Doctors operates out of Nairobi's Wilson Airport with decades of Mara evacuations behind it; an airstrip is never far, and Nairobi's private hospitals are under an hour's flight away. You still need real evacuation cover — but the limits can be more moderate than the remote-wilderness destinations demand.

Reserve vs conservancy — an insurance distinction

The main reserve offers classic vehicle-based safari, insurable under any policy. The private conservancies ringing it — Naboisho, Olare Motorogi, Mara North — are where the activity list expands: walking safaris, night drives, off-road tracking. Those are exactly the activities where mainstream wordings wobble. If your camp is in a conservancy, assume your itinerary includes them and check each by name.

What a Mara-ready policy looks like

• Evacuation cover of $100,000–$250,000 — the flying-doctor network shortens the chain, but a Nairobi ICU admission is still the destination.

• Walking safaris covered if you're staying in a conservancy.

• Night drives named or confirmed in writing.

• For balloon flights over the Mara (a growing add-on), the same aerial-activities check as the Serengeti.

One Kenya-specific note: many visitors combine the Mara with beach time in Diani or Lamu. The domestic hops are scheduled carriers and unproblematic — it's the Mara airstrip legs that fall under charter wording.
