The permit is the risk

Rwanda's no-refund rule isn't bureaucratic stubbornness: gorillas catch human respiratory infections, and a sniffle that would be nothing at home disqualifies you at the trailhead. Trip cancellation protects the permit if your whole trip collapses before departure; the trailhead scenario — you're here, you're sick, the permit burns — needs permit protection or unusually generous interruption wording. Look for the benefit by name and note the reimbursement percentage.

Altitude, terrain, and getting out

Treks range roughly 2,500–4,000m depending on where your assigned gorilla family has moved. That clears the common 4,500m policy ceilings but breaches the occasional 3,000m one. An injury on the slopes means a ranger-and-porter stretcher carry to the trailhead — a well-drilled routine here — then road to Kigali, whose hospitals are the region's strongest. Rwanda is the logistically easiest gorilla destination, which is exactly why moderate evacuation limits suffice where Bwindi demands more.
