Per-Item Limit
The maximum a policy pays for any one item within the overall baggage benefit — commonly $250–$500 on mainstream policies. The clause that makes generic baggage cover useless for camera gear worth thousands.
A policy advertising $3,000 of baggage cover may still cap any single item at $500. For safari photographers that math collapses instantly: one telephoto lens can exceed the entire baggage benefit, let alone the per-item cap.
What to do about it
Add up your gear's real replacement value before comparing policies.
Check the per-item limit, the total limit, and any special sub-limit for "valuables" or electronics.
For serious kit, use an insurer with a dedicated gear extension or a standalone equipment policy.
