The amount you pay out of pocket before insurance pays anything, per claim. Called an excess in UK and South African policies. A $0 deductible medical benefit is worth real money on safari, where small clinic visits are common.
A $250 deductible barely matters against a $100,000 evacuation, but it matters a lot for the routine claims safaris actually generate: a clinic visit for a stomach bug, a course of antimalarials after exposure, a cracked phone screen.
US policies often feature $0 deductibles on medical benefits; UK and South African wordings nearly always carry an excess per section, per person, per event — which multiplies quickly for a family. Neither approach is wrong, but compare like with like.
